Book Excerpt #6 -
Debbie had volunteered to fill a few hours during a
co-worker’s medical appointment; Jordan
frittered those hours envisioning Rhonda’s torturous party. He yanked every
shirt from his broken dresser and fought with the drawers; they sprung their
tracks and refused to navigate the slides. After changing several times, he
settled into cut-off jeans and a t-shirt; his clothes wouldn’t matter; they’d
make fun of him. Debbie burst through the door, arms laden with grocery bags.
“Quick, help me.” Jordan
unpacked the items and handed them to Debbie; she organized the refrigerator,
and she hurried him to the car.
Debbie had used pity and guilt to secure Jordan’s
invitation to Rhonda’s birthday party. Their car rolled and stopped at a green,
A-framed house; Rhonda’s mother waved as Debbie nudged Jordan
to leave the car. “Have fun,” she told him. He grimaced and trailed Rhonda’s
mom to their cellar door.
Jordan
stewed in the corner; he shredded a streamer ribbon while classmates played
music and talked.
Rhonda Sue asked, “Who wants to play a game?”
Her best friend, busty, blonde, Theresa answered, “We have
to play Seven Minutes In Heaven.” Theresa yearned to enter the dark with Dean,
voted the most popular boy in their class. She established the game’s limits,
flashed her eager, green eyes at Dean, and added that players could change
their rules when they entered the closet.
Jordan
didn’t move; Rhonda Sue pulled him into their circle, and all the girls
giggled. “My mom made me include him,’” she said and rolled her eyes. A bottle
spun in the group’s center; gasps and groans erupted as it nearly missed
landing on him; he shrunk inside himself.
“He’ll sit alone in the closet, or with someone who’ll enjoy
seven minutes punching him,” one of the boys said. The crowd giggled, and the
boys slapped hands.
